Later that day, I give Sera a video call. She’s wearing reading glasses by the time she comes into view, dark shadows outlining her tired eyes, but at the sight of me, she brightens, her smile lighting her face up like a Christmas tree.

“You know you don’t have to keep working until you dig yourself into the ground, right?” I say. “On second thought, you don’t have to work at all.”

“It’s nice to see you too, Piper,” she says. “I’ve missed you as much as you’ve missed me.”

I scoff. “I haven’t, okay? In fact, I’m planning to move to Paris. I’ll spend the rest of my days filling my mouth with Tanda’s food.”

Sera laughs. “She’s very good. We offered for her to relocate to Seattle, but she didn’t want to. She grew up in Paris; the city is a part of her.”

“Well, I’d turn down that offer, too,” I say. “I’m sure I don’t exactly have to point this out, but Seattle doesn’t have an Eiffel Tower.”

Sera chuckles. “I suppose you’re right.”

“How are the children?” I ask.

“Onen is as fiery as ever. Many times, I’ve wondered if he isn’t that way because of the coffee I had when I was pregnant with him. I envy him; if I had half of the energy he does, I’d have conquered the world.”

“You have,” I say, raising my hand, my thumb and index finger just an inch apart. “A small portion of it.”

“I suppose,” she says. “Mo... “ Her brows furrow and her eyes glisten. As I watch, she pulls out a handkerchief and dabs at the corners of her eyes with it. When she speaks, her voice falters a little.

“Mo has been difficult,” she says. “I can’t help but feel like my own daughter doesn’t like me, and I hate feeling that way. Sometimes, it’s as if she doesn’t need me, like she was born into this world a thirty-one-year-old who can take care of herself. Around Alan, though, she’s different. They sit for hours and play chess and talk, and if you were eavesdropping, you’d think he was talking to someone that works for him.

She’s so smart for her age, and I can see that her questions test him. It’s fun for the both of them—he gets to mentor her, and she gets to spend time with her dad. And I suppose that I shouldn’t stint them their father-daughter time. I had Mo for eight years before Alan came back into our lives, but now it’s like she’s outgrown me and wants nothing to do with her mom anymore. I... I miss her.”

By the time Sera is done, she’s sobbing, beads of tears streaking down her cheeks, tracing a salty path. Suddenly, the distance between us feels like a physical pain. If only I were in Seattle with her, I would have thrown my arms around her and promised her it was going to be okay.

Sera dries her eyes with the handkerchief. She sniffles, chuckling. “I needed that. It feels like years since I had a good cry.
